Truman Capote was an American writer, also known for his intense and eccentric social life. He was born on September 30, 1924 in New Orleans, Louisiana and his real name was Truman Persons. His parents divorced when he was 4, his grandmother took care of him. In 1933 his mother remarried and gave him the name of her second husband; they went to New York. Capote wrote articles for the school newspaper and when he finished school, he decided not to go to college but to dedicate himself to writing. In 1945, his first short story was published, while in 1948 his first novel "Other Voices Other Places" was a great commercial success. Since then he has been involved in writing, theater, journalism and cinema. In 1958 he wrote the novel "Breakfast at Tiffany's" which is his best known work and became a very popular film. In November 1959, news of four unexplained murders in Kansas sparked interest and an investigation was launched. The result was his next novel: "In Cold Blood", which is considered ask his most important work. Capote was famously having parties in New York and was attracting media attention with his hectic social life, his relationships with celebrities, his extremes and eccentricities, and his declared homosexuality. In 1975 he published an excerpt from his unfinished work, When Prayers Are Heard, in Esquire magazine, in which he described the lives of his wealthy and famous friends. Friends became angry with him, Capote gradually was isolated and immersed himself in alcohol and drugs. He died on August 25, 1984, after consuming a large amount of pills. |
