Osian Gwynn Ellis (1928 - 2021) was a Welsh harpist, composer, harpist, arranger, singer and scholar who contributed to the preservation of his country's traditional music. Born in Flintshire on February 8, 1928, his father was a priest and his mother an amateur harpist. Ellis found his mother's harp and started playing; he was also interested in football, his friends said he was better at football than the harp. He studied at the Royal Academy of Music where he would later become harp teacher from 1959 to 1989. He became a member of the London Symphony Orchestra in 1961 and soon acquired the position of chief harpist. He was a founding member of the Melos Ensemble and also formed the Osian Ellis Harp Ensemble. Ellis' 1959 recording of Handel's harp concertos (with Therston Dart) won the Grand Prix du Disque. He became Commander of the Order of the British Empire in 1971. He was the Honorary President of the International Harp Festival in Wales and was honored at the festival in Caernarfon in 2018, when his lateast work was premiered to celebrate his 90th birthday. He died after 3 years, on January 5, 2021. |
