Biography
Mahagame Sekara (Sinhalese: 29 සේකර / මහගමගේ සේකර) (1929-1976) was an important Sri Lankan poet, and also a lyricist, playwright, novelist, translator and director. He is considered one of the most important personalities in Sinaitic poetry and literature. Many of his works are still becoming popular songs in Sri Lanka.He was born on April 7, 1929 in Radawana near Colombo, Sri Lanka, then known by its colonial name, Ceylon. (Only in 1972 did it acquire the name Sri Lanka). Mahagame showed an artistic nature from an early age and began his career as a painter, but soon focused on writing, contributing to every branch of literature. He wrote short essays and works in weekly newspapers and magazines, published several novels and poems, often with Buddhist influences, and wrote over 100 songs.
Multifaceted and immovable, Mahagame received his doctorate from Vidyodaya University, in 1975 submitted his dissertation on "The Influence of Rhythm on Prose and Poetry". A year later, on January 14, 1976, he died unexpectedly of a heart attack.
