Otto Eduard Leopold, Prince of Bismarck, was one of the most important German politicians of the 19th century, a pioneer of German unification in 1871. He was born in the Prussian province of Brandenburg, west of Berlin, on April 1, 1815. His father was an aristocrat and officer in the Prussian army, Otto was a mediocre student, he barely studied law and then he lived for a decade with endless feasts, drunkenness and many duels. In his thirties, he suddenly changed behavior, got married, had three children, took over his property and got involved with politics, on the side of the conservative wing. He singled out because of his rhetoric and his exuberant nature, in 1862 Emperor Wilhelm I of Prussia appointed him Prime Minister of Prussia. Bismarck from the beginning worked for the unification of the German states and principalities under the leadership of Prussia. He made war on Austria and managed to win in seven weeks, requiring to leave the old German federation, so that in the new unified Germany would be only one great power, Prussia. Many German principalities of the south reacted to his plans and in order to force them to go along, he found a common enemy. He started a war with French which he won, also bribed the last who resisted and on January 18, 1871 the new German Empire by Emperor William the First of Prussia was proclaimed. William appointed him prime minister and for the next 28 years Bismarck was the absolute leader of Germany and regulator of things in Europe. He held abroad the balance and kept the peace while inside made important reforms, he was the first politician in Europe who created a social security system, providing coverage to workers in the event of accident, sickness and old age. In 1890 William II came to the throne who he did not want to play a decorative role as his predecessor, they had big fights and he resigned. Bismarck retired to his estates, he wrote "Thoughts and Memories" and lived quietly until his death on July 30, 1898.
