Onesimo Silveira (1935 -2021) was a Cape Verdean poet, writer and politician. He was born on February 10, 1935 in Mindelo and after graduating from high school he traveled to China and then to Uppsala, Sweden where he studied at the university and received his PhD in Political Science.
In Sweden he made contacts with the Swedish parties, and in Norway with the Norwegian Labor Party, promoting the building of political solidarity for the Guinean's and Cape Verde's Independence Party "PAIGC" when the struggle for independence from Portugal was underway in Guinea-Bissau, Cape Verde, Angola and Mozambique. He represented the PAIGC party in Sweden until November 1972. From 1976 he worked for the United Nations, representing the UN in countries such as Somalia, Angola and Mozambique. In his hometown Mindelo, he became mayor and in November 1998 he formed his own political party, in 2006 he was elected MP. From a young age, Silveira wrote poems and the same time he was struggling for freedom and democracy in his vountry, he became one of the most important poets, writers and literary critics. His first collection of poetry was published in 1962 and was entitled "Grand Hour", the last in 2008. In addition to his poems, he published novels and essays on politics, sociology and anthropology. He also translated books and contributed with articles to magazines in Cape Verde, Portugal, France, Sweden and Norway. He died on April 29, 2021, after a long illness and after being bedridden for some months. |
