Jean-Baptiste Frédéric Isidor Thielemans, (1922 - 2016), professionally known as Toots Thielemans, was a Belgian jazz musician. Born in Brussels on April 29, 1922, his parents had a coffee. He started playing music at a young age, during the German occupation he learned to play the accordion and later the guitar. He started studying mathematics but stopped considering himself a full-time musician. His first professional appearances were with Benny Goodman's band in 1949 and 1950. He immigrated to the United States in 1951 and became an American citizen in 1957. From 1953 to 1959 he played with George Searing and then led his own band in tours in the US and Europe. In 1961 he recorded and performed live one of his own compositions, "Bluesette", with which was very successful. In the 1970s and 1980s, he continued touring and recording. He recorded the soundtrack of many films such as: The Pawnbroker (1964), The Midnight Cowboy (1969), The Two Fugitives (1972), Cinderella Liberty (1973), The Sugarland Express (1974). His theme song for the popular Sesame Street TV show has been heard for 40 years. Thielemans in 2012, appeared aat Lincoln Center in New York celebrating his 90th birthday. Until then, he continued his appearances in Europe and America, then, due to health problems, he was led to cancellations of performances. He died after 4 years, in Belgium, on August 22, 2016. |
