Tiziano Vecelli or Tiziano Vecellio (Titian in English) was an Italian painter, an important
member of the 16th-century Venetian school.He was born between 1488 and 1490, in Pieve di Cadore, near Belluno
(Republic of Venice). As a teenager he became an artist's apprentice in Venice and around 1518
became a leading artist with the completion of "Assumption of the Virgin."
He was soon painting for leading members of royalty, including King Philip II
of Spain and Charles V, the Holy Roman Emperor. Pope Paul III also hired Titian to paint portraits
of himself and his grandsons.
Titian died on August 27, 1576.
