Vangelis Papathanassiou (1943 - 2022), internationally known as Vangelis, was a Greek musician and composer, who influenced the development of many different musical genres and was a pioneer of electronic sound. He was born on March 29, 1943 in Agria, Volos and from a young age he showed his musical talent, as he started creating music without any education, from a very young age. After high school he studied classical music, painting and directing at the Academy of Fine Arts in Athens. In the early 1960s he joined the band Forminx with which he had a great success with the song Jeronimo Yanka which went gold in its first week of release. In 1968 he moved to Paris and together with Demis Rousseau created the group "Aphrodite’s Child"; they had great success, especially with the double album entitled 666.



In 1975 he left Aphrodite's Child to settle in London, where he founded state-of-the-art music recording facilities and released records that made him famous al over the world. A large part of Papathanassiou's compositions were created to accompany film productions, his top soundtrack was "Chariots of Fire" for the 1981 film with the same name, which won the Oscar for Best Original Score. He also wrote the music for: "Blade Runner", "1492: Christopher Columbus", "Alexander", "El Greco" and many others.

In 1997 he directed the opening ceremony of the 6th World Athletics Championships, in 2002 he composed the official music for the 2002 FIFA World Cup in South Korea - Japan, his work Mythodia was selected by NASA as the official music for the mission to Mars.

He died on May 17, 2022, in France, after 3 months in a hospital with corona virus.
