Biography
Stavros Xarchakos (March 14, 1939) is a Greek composer and conductor, one of the most important contemporary Greek composers.
He was born in Athens on March 14, 1939 and studied at the Athens Conservatory and then in Paris and the Julliard School of Music in New York. He has written songs for more than 42 albums, music for more than 20 films and has composed music for ancient tragedy, dramas and international ballet. His first great success was the music for Vassilis Georgiadis's film "Red Lanterns": with songs such as "Aponi zoi" and "Ftochologia", From 1965 onwards he collaborated with the poet Nikos Gatsos, for the creation of songs such as "Aspri Mera", "Matia Vourkomena", "Stou Othonas ta chronia", "Me ti kardia ton kosmos n 'arnitho"; "Hello, Venice "," God put a mark ", From the late 60's he started to write classical music, his works include ballet suites, concerts and symphonic works.
Xarchakos was also involved in politics, he was a municipal councilor, member of parliament and MEP (2000-2004). He has been awarded many times at film and music festivals, in December 2019 he was awarded an honorary doctorate by the Department of Music Studies of the Faculty of Philosophy of the University of Athens.
