The October Revolution of 1917 was one of the most decisive events of the 20th century, as it radically changed the history of Russia and influenced the entire world. It took place in Russia during a period of severe political, social, and economic crisis.
The Russian Empire was in deep decline. World War I had placed enormous strain on the economy, while millions of soldiers had been killed or wounded. The population faced hunger, poverty, and shortages of basic necessities. Discontent with Tsar Nicholas II was steadily growing.
In February 1917, a revolution broke out in Petrograd, leading to the fall of the Tsarist monarchy and the establishment of a provisional government. However, this government failed to resolve the country’s problems or withdraw from the war, which further increased social tension.
In this climate of rising dissatisfaction, the Bolshevik Party, led by Vladimir Lenin, promised peace, land for the peasants, and power to the workers’ and soldiers’ councils (soviets). Their ideas quickly gained support among large parts of the population.
In October 1917 (according to the old Russian calendar), the Bolsheviks organized an armed uprising in Petrograd. They seized key locations in the city and overthrew the provisional government with relatively little resistance. This event became known as the October Revolution.
After taking power, the Bolsheviks established a new state based on communist principles. They signed peace with Germany and withdrew from World War I. However, a brutal civil war soon followed between the “Reds” (Bolsheviks) and the “Whites” (opposing forces).
In 1922, the Soviet Union was officially established as a new state based on socialist ideology and a one-party system. The revolution had a profound impact on global politics, inspiring revolutionary movements while also creating deep ideological divisions that shaped much of the 20th century.
The October Revolution was not merely a change of government, but a profound transformation of society, the economy, and political thought worldwide.
